Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate Come Together at an All-Female Event at Vinitaly

Historically, rival publications in the same sector and country rarely even mention each other if they can avoid it, and almost never allow their journalists to collaborate. So, the announcement that Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate and Alison Napjus of the Wine Spectator will be sharing a stage at Vinitaly will surprise many in the wine industry.

The event that is bringing these two Italian wine experts together is a special tasting focusing on six wineries that are all run by women across Italy. The wines on show will be from:

  • Marilisa Allegrini
  • Albiera Antinori
  • Elisabetta Foradori
  • Elena Fucci
  • Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta
  • Arianna Occhipinti

Apart from a few iconic figures – especially in Champagne - the European wine industry has tended to be a male-dominated world. Jancis Robinson MW remembers being one of a very small minority at tastings in London and Bordeaux in the 1980s.

That picture has changed radically in recent years, especially in Italy, where the list of top female wine makers and estate owner/managers grows with every year.

This event – titled ‘Iconic Women in Italian Wine’, on April 10 at Veronafiere in Verona, is already sold out, but hopefully others will follow – possibly with further collaborations by these two experts.
