The authorities in Alsace think Riesling should be dry. Australian experts - and Jancis Robinson MW - beg to differ. And so does Rolly Gassmann, one of Alsace's top producers, who even launched an online petition to fight the move.
In the new specifications of the AOC Alsace, it shall be stated that Riesling may only be vinified dry - below 4 grams of residual sugar/liter. At least, if the grape variety is to be mentioned on the label.

The Riesling marathon is over and the winners have been determined: almost 1,600 wines from 14 countries of origin entered the race and were on the tasting tables from mid-May to early June. The Australian 2022 Logan Ridge of Tears Riesling Orange was chosen as the best “dry Riesling from the New World”.
The VDP has made around 450 wines from 2017 to 2021 available for tasting. Of the 629 GGs that will be released from September 1, 2022, 380 are Rieslings. The 2021 Riesling vintage does not come close to the great 2019 vintage, nor to 2020. However, top wineries from Rheinhessen, Nahe and Pfalz offer numerous highlights.
