The Spanish foreign trade institute ICEX (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) is collaborating with the Meininger publishing house to host a major international tasting event in 2024/2025. The Meininger subsidiary MUNDUS VINI GmbH will be responsible for the operational implementation of the new ‘Wines from Spain Awards’. With this initiative, the publisher successfully outperformed renowned international competitors in a global tender.
"The Wines from Spain Awards is a global initiative by ICEX/Wines from Spain with a clear objective to promote the image and sales of Spanish quality wines worldwide, and to support their presence in specialized wine and gourmet retail channels as well as in the HoReCa channel in international markets. With this initiative, ICEX/Wines from Spain is uniting all previously held competitions in international markets into a single reference competition for Spanish wines worldwide," explained Pablo Calvo, ICEX Wine Director, highlighting the significant relevance of this new competition for the wine industry.
Presentation of Wines at ProWein 2025
The wines will be evaluated by a professional jury of approximately 35 members from around the world, using a 100-point system, and they will be rated on a scale of Silver, Gold, or Grand Gold. The top 100 wines will be awarded in various categories to acknowledge the diversity of styles and consumer preferences, such as ‘Red Wine over €7.50 (Ex-Cellar)’ or ‘Premium Sparkling Wine (>€10 Ex-Cellar)’. The ultra-premium segment will also have its own category. "By introducing the 'Super Premium' category, we aim to highlight the excellence of Spanish wines," Calvo said.
"The award-winning wines will be presented for the first time at ProWein 2025 and promoted throughout the year in some of the most important export markets for Spanish quality wines with an extensive advertising campaign (both print and online) and high-profile events," states Sonja Overhage-Mrosk from ICEX. These key markets include the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Japan.
Participation required prior registration via the ICEX website. The final wine registration will then take place in the second half of the year through the professional MUNDUS VINI registration tool.
