The Italian Ministry of Agriculture, together with the ISMEA Institute (Istituto di Servizi per il Mercato Agricolo Alimentare), published the report "The Organic Wine Sector" at the beginning of August 2021.

The study sheds light on international organic wine production and focuses on Italy. According to the report, of seven million hectares of vineyards worldwide, 6.7 percent, or just under 500,000 hectares, are cultivated organically – more than twice as much as ten years ago.

In Italy, organic cultivation grew by 109 percent in the same period. The latest reliable figures are from 2019 and show 107,143 hectares, which is 19 percent of the national total. This is the highest percentage of organically certified cultivation in the world.

Italy's northern regions have caught up with the south over the past decade. Northern Italy now accounts for 22.8 percent of Italy’s organic vineyards, central Italy for 22.5 percent, and southern Italy comes in at 25.5 percent. The islands were recorded separately and their share is 29.2 percent, mainly due to Sicily and to a lesser extent Sardinia.

The report states that there are more than 18,000 organic wine producers in Italy and about 25,000 people are involved in the production chain. Italy is the leader at the European level, not only in the cultivation but also in the export of organic wines. Germany and France, on the other hand, are the main consumers of organic wine.
