Pedro Ferrer, CEO and Vice President of the Freixenet Group, was elected as the President of the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV) on Wednesday. He succeeds Emilio Restoy from Bodegas Ramón Bilbao in the position.
In his inaugural speech, Ferrer emphasized the importance of viticulture for the rural regions of Spain If fewer and fewer people grow wine, there is a risk of depopulation and desertification of the countryside. Therefore, he appealed to the present Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas, to advocate more strongly for the interests of wine producers both within the cabinet and at the EU level. Ferrer highlighted the significant issue of questioning legitimate, moderate wine consumption in those arenas. He stated, "The moderation that we defend at FEV should not only apply to consumption but also to public and political debates."
The FEV is the association of Spanish wine producers, representing more than 950 wineries.
