Statistics Austria estimates the 2022 harvest volume at around 2.43 mill. hl. This is 1 percent below the previous year's value and 2 percent below the five-year average. Above all, the Weinviertel region - responsible for about one third of the Austrian harvest - drops significantly to 810,000 hl (-12%) and is responsible for the slightly below-average overall result, along with the Carnuntum (-14%), Neusiedlersee (-2%) and Kremstal (-7%) regions. The Leithaberg (+17%), Mittelburgenland (+5%), Kamptal (+5%), Wagram (+4%) and Südsteiermark (+8%) regions, on the other hand, recorded volume increases compared to the previous year.
Drought was the overriding theme in summer, but at the end of August the longed-for rainfall finally arrived, so that the emaciated grapes gained some volume. The acidity levels are clearly lower than normal. (VM)
