Regional late frost and hail, nationwide summer heat - an early harvest brought low yields in Austria in 2024. Estimated at the end of September at 1.9m hl of must and wine, Statistik Austria now finally reports 1.87m hl of wine for the 2024 vintage. This puts the production volume 22% below the five-year average. Wine stocks, on the other hand, remain at the previous year's level with 3.04m hl, with a slight increase of 3% on the five-year average.
All of Austria's wine-growing regions reported production declines, with Lower Austria recording the highest at 1.18m hl - down 23% year-on-year. White wine declined more sharply (-24%), while red and rosé wine fell to 245,200 hl (-17%). Within Lower Austria, the Kamptal recorded the largest decline of 35% compared to 2023.
Burgenland, despite low average yields per hectare than Lower Austria, reports "only" a minus of 14% and, with 504,000 hl, is 16% below the five-year average. Styria shows 16% less production, the quantity of 159,200 hl is even 29% below the five-year average. Vienna gets off comparatively lightly with minus 5%, with red wine declining by only 1%.
Production down, stocks high
A 19% lower quantity of quality and Prädikatswein than in 2023 was produced: 1.76m hl, with white wine again recording greater losses (-21%) than red and rosé wine (-13%). Compared to the previous year, wine and Landwein (including varietal wine and Sturm) are even 35% below the previous year's value and 46% below the five-year average. White wine/Landwein, at 49,800 hl, is even 43% below the previous year's quantity, while red wine is only 19% lower.
As of July 31, 2024, Austria's wine stocks amounted to 3.04m hl, thus remaining at the previous year's high. White wine reserves stand at 1.73m hl, red wine at 1.32m hl. Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein also remained constant at 2.45m hl, only Wein/Landwein fell by 5% year-on-year to 279,100 hl.
