Chambertin under screwcap

by Hervé Lalau

Grégory Patriat, the chief winemaker at Jean-Claude Boisset, announced last week that he will bottle his Chambertin 2005 under screwcap. This is a small revolution in an otherwise staid Burgundy, which tends to look askance at alternative

closures, especially for their finest wines. The merchant in Nuits Saint Georges had already chosen the screwcap for some whites, but Patriat insisted that \'the future of great wines is under screwcap". These wines will be first shipped to Britain, before they are sold in France.

With this move Boisset joins André Lurton from Château La Louvière, Michel Laroche from Chablis and Frédéric Blanck from Alsace, who have all already bottled Grand Cru under screwcap.
