Ciatti Report: First Forecasts from the Southern Hemisphere

Ciatti’s bulk wine brokers have released the first volume forecasts for the ongoing southern hemisphere harvest.

  • Argentina is currently expecting 2.09m tonnes of grapes — a 9% increase compared to last year.
     
  • Chile, on the other hand, is facing a significantly reduced harvest, with volumes projected to be 20–30% below average.
     
  • In South Africa, the harvest is expected to be slightly above last year’s extremely low level. The new vintage is already being traded — at noticeably higher prices.
     
  • In Australia, only vague rumours are circulating that white wine volumes are likely to be slightly down on last year.
     
  • New Zealand is heading for a large harvest. Sauvignon Blanc prices continue to fall, while price drops in other categories are mainly due to exchange rate effects.

Globally, the bulk wine market since mid-February can be characterised as slow and steady. The Southern Hemisphere harvests are now well underway.
