The member companies of the Association of German Sparkling Wine Producers (Verband Deutscher Sektkellereien e.V. / VDS) sold approximately 284.6m 0.75-liter bottles of Sekt (the German name for sparkling wine) in 2022. This represents a sales increase of 2.8% in both domestic and international markets compared to 2021, according to data collected by the VDS itself. With this, Sekt is defying the downward trend observed in German still wines.

One out of every six bottles of Sekt is now a Rosé, accounting for 16.4% of the total volume. Even more significant is the growth of non-alcoholic Sekt, with a sales increase of 7.2%. However, the association did not provide overall volume figures for this category in its announcement.

"The industry is on a good path to reach pre-pandemic levels again. Even though the economic conditions remain tense, consumers have a need for moments of pleasure. The mood for Sekt remains stable," says Dr. Alexander Taver, Managing Director of the VDS.

Around 450 different sparkling wines from classic bottle fermentation were put into the glasses at the Meininger German Sparkling Wine Award. The upward trend continues, and the sparklings are becoming increasingly high-class - and bold.
