For 2025, France plans to reintroduce a deposit system for glass bottles in supermarkets—but likely not for wine bottles. According to the platform Vitisphere, the mission-driven company Citeo presented initial outlines of the rollout phase to the press at the end of August last year. Starting in May 2025, more than 1,000 stores will implement the deposit system as part of the ReUse initiative. However, during these presentations, wine bottles were largely 'forgotten' in the examples of containers that could be returned for deposits of 20 or 30 cents.
In May 2023, Citeo launched the ReUse initiative to develop a national and unified reuse system for food packaging in large and medium-sized supermarkets. The goal: by 2027, 10% of packaging used in France should be reusable. However, the company’s website currently lists only glass bottles for beer, fruit juices, or jams.
