Torrential rain in the Rioja region last weekend forced a hasty and difficult grape harvest, according to various Spanish media. In areas like Alfaro, rainfall reached up to 55 liters per square meter, while Nájera recorded 34 liters.

Due to the downpour on September 21–22, 2024, some winemakers decided to start harvesting early, fearing the risk of botrytis and unwilling to wait for the optimal ripeness. If warm temperatures follow in the coming days, the infection risk could worsen. Up until just before the rain, the outlook for the current vintage was fantastic, with normal yields and exceptionally high grape quality. Now, these expectations may need to be revised, as a rushed and early harvest could negatively impact quality.

Winemakers are working tirelessly to complete the harvest before conditions deteriorate further. Many are concerned as flooded roads make access to some vineyards difficult. The impact varies significantly across the region, with winemakers in La Rioja Baja hit harder, while others, like in La Rioja Alta, view the situation as less critical.

The weather remains uncertain, and cool, windy days are hoped for to contain the spread of botrytis. Samples are currently being taken from the vineyards to assess the health of the grapes and determine whether to speed up the harvest further. MS

More polyphenols. Less wax. A mutation discovered in a clone of Tempranillo suggests that some old vines can adapt to higher temperatures, reports Barnaby Eales.
