Canadian consumers will be buying more wine over the next three years. That s the conclusion of a study conducted by the British company IWSR for Vinexpo. In 2005 Canadians purchased 396 million bottles, which represented an increase
of 23.2% over the 2001-2005 period. Canada is ranked 9th on the worldwide league of table wine purchases by value.
Even though the country has a thriving wine industry of its own in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia, Canada, in lockstep with the global trend, imported close to 70 per cent of those wines. IWSR projections predict an increase of 22.2% in imported wines to Canada in the period between 2005 and 2010 to reach 2.5 million hectolitres, reaching 71.5% of the volumes consumed.
Canadian consumption figures per capita increased by 18.61 per cent over the aforesaid period to 2005 and should, according to the report, continue to grow at a rate of 10.51% between 2005 and 2010.
