Trentino, under the Dolomite mountains, is one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. It’s also the home of Mezzacorona – one of the largest first-level cooperatives in Italy.

Which also happens to be one of Italy’s most celebrated wine producers.

This was recognised at the prestigious Mundus Vini Spring Tasting 2025, in Germany, when Gruppo Mezzacorona was awarded Best Italian Producer.

The power of unity

Founded in 1904 by 11 members, Mezzacorona now brings 1,600 winegrowers together. Throughout its history, it has played a vital role in sustaining small family vineyards, while upholding Trentino’s regional identity.

This is exemplified by the Cittadella del Vino (‘City of Wine’), a prize-winning architectural project spread over 11 hectares. Built like a village, it includes a winery, a cellar, offices, warehouse and shop, along with a full auditorium.

Conceived in 1995 and completed in 2000, it was designed by architect Alberto Cecchetto to embody Mezzacorona’s commitment to sustainable, quality-driven winemaking and community values. It’s a masterpiece of sustainability, built with local materials and lightweight wood, and fully integrated with the landscape. As visitors walk around, they can see representations of the landscape spread out around them.

And, of course, they only have to step outside the front door to enjoy the spectacular alpine region.

Technologically advanced

One of the great strengths of Mezzacorona is that while its size and strength means families can keep their traditions alive, it’s also highly innovative — Mezzacorona is recognised as the most digitally advanced winery in Italy.

This prowess starts with monitoring of soil and water in the vineyard, goes through the exceptional quality control in the winery, to the energy-efficient fleet management, and to the QR codes on the bottles which give consumers instant access to ingredient transparency and information about the region.

Just as significantly, Mezzacorona has invested heavily in energy efficiency, renewable resources and sustainable production methods.

And it has an active social media presence, connecting directly with wine lovers.

In fact, it could be argued that Mezzacorona is the most digitally advanced company in Italy. This combination of tradition and modernity has made it attractive to the next generation, because they get the best of all possible worlds. In turn, the presence of so many younger growers makes Mezzacorona highly dynamic.

A higher level of sustainability

Of course, it doesn’t matter how advanced a winery is — it can only make great wine if it has great grapes.

Mezzacorona sits in Trentino’s Piana Rotaliana, a fertile plain surrounded by mountains. The vineyards themselves rise from the valley floors to the terraced hillsides, benefiting from a series of microclimates, including mild winds and optimal sun exposure. The alluvial and gravelly soils deposited by the Adige River give the grapes the drainage they need.

They also have vines in the south of Trentino, close to Lake Garda, where the Mediterranean microclimate is perfect for Merlot and Cabernet.

All the vineyards are farmed sustainability, with all growers certified under Italy’s Sistema di Qualità Nazionale per la Produzione Integrata (SQNPI). Since the 1980s, the cooperative has pioneered sustainable practices ranging from Integrated Pest Management to water conservation, all of which contributes to grape quality.

The winery is also certified Sustainable by Equalitas, one of the most rigorous of all sustainability certifications, covering not just soil, water, carbon emissions and even lichen diversity, but also good economic and social practices.

The proof is in the acclaimed wines

As this is a cool climate, the acidity of the grapes is perfectly preserved. Varieties that do particularly well here include:
