At the 13th edition of the Biofach, Grand International Organic Wine Awards in mid-January, an international jury of nearly 30 experts judged almost 500 organic wines from 13 countries.
Following the tasting, the results confirmed the growing qualities of organic wines that had been entered in the competition.
One Grand Gold, 85 Gold and 108 Silver medals were awarded to the best wines, and nine top-rated wines were named ‘Best Organic Wine’ in their categories.
Once again, the most successful country was Italy, which led the ranking with 28 Gold and 39 Slver medals. For the first time, France came second, with 20 gold and silver medals. Spanish organic wines also impressed the judges, with 1 Grand Gold, 13 Gold and 19 Silver medals. Last in the quintet of winners was Germany (11 gold and 16 Silver) and Austria with 4 Gold and 8 Silver medals.
Fattoria La Vialla (international, 4 gold and 5 silver medals) and Weingut Porzelt NJational, 4 Gold and 3 Silver medals) were both named Organic Wineries of the Year.
Head of tasting, Christian Wolf, emphasizes that organic wines have changed in terms of quality and customer perception: "While a few years ago it may really have been the case that organic wines could not always keep up with their conventional counterparts in terms of quality , we have seen immense leaps in quality in the development of recent years. Organic wine today is definitely no longer defined exclusively and primarily by its organic cultivation, but by its quality and additionally by its respect for the environment."
