Cava Producer Numbers Down, But Cava Exports Are Up

Cava exports increased in volume and value. Retail continues to drive the category. Surprisingly, some markets experienced rapid growth.

According to the 2022 export report of the DO Cava, the origin recorded a significant increase. Total sales increased 4.58 percent over 2021 to 249.1 mill. bottles. The export channel accounts for the lion's share at 69 percent. The import winner is Germany, with an increase of 2.2 percent, followed by the USA, Belgium and the UK. For the first time, Sweden was able to hold its own in fifth place with an increase of around 35 percent. 

On the domestic market, Cava increased its sales by around 13 percent, reaching a volume of 77.8 mill bottles. The drivers were the retail trade, with an increase of 32.3 percent in value and 30.4 percent in volume. 

The most successful category was Guarda Superior, which must be 100 percent organic from 2025. With a growth of 40.7 percent compared to 2021, they have reached a total volume of approximately 32 mill. bottles. 

Overall, the number of cava producers fell from 266 to 206 producers in 2009. The number of base wine producers also dropped from 164 in 2009 to 144 in 2022, with white cava accounting for 90 percent of the total and rosé for 10 percent. In total, 12.5 percent of cava wines are produced organically. PD
