Argentina, expects one of the smallest crops in the last 20 years, due to October frosts and hailstorms in January.

Australia is also expecting a below-average harvest, and it is unclear how tropical storm Gabrielle will affect the vintage in New Zealand.

South Africa has issued an initial forecast of 1.28m tonnes, which would be 6.5% below the previous year (1.37m tonnes).

Chile is alone in looking forward to a normal, average-size harvest.

North of the equator California bulk buyers are very cautious and there are growing concerns over future sales prospects.
